50 Pts Hard University Of Louisville Media Effec
Reflection Paper Assignment
(Original concept by Michael Porter and Jennifer Aubrey)
Due: Tuesday, June 30 (50 pts); Hard Copy Uploaded to BBoard by 5:00PM
The point of this paper is to pick a topic that we covered in class and reflect on how it impacts your use and/or understanding of the media. This is your chance to demonstrate what you have learned from taking this course. I expect complexity of thought and maturity of ideas presented. This is an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned and present your ideas in a logical and persuasive manner.
I would like you to reflect on one of the following topics:
- Media Economics
- The Persuasion Industries (PR, advertising, OR marketing)
- Media Effects (violence, sexuality, body image, OR stereotypes)
- You may also submit a topic of your own choice to me; just let me know in advance so I can approve it.
Really, choose just ONE. For example, if you choose Media Effects, you can choose from violence, sexuality, body image, or stereotypes. You DON’T have to do all four topics!!!
Think about one thing that you learned from this semester about one of these topics that you found particularly surprising and/or interesting. You can either do this assignment individually or with a partner.
You will need to write a 5-page paper, in which you and your partner will interview each other on what you thought about the topic before taking the class and whether your thoughts about the topic have changed after taking the class. You will also address how this topic impacts your life, your media use, and/or your understanding of media. You will also address whether or not you agree with each other, and if relevant, you will reflect on why you might have differences.
Grading Guidelines:
1. Your paper should adhere to the length requirement for either the individual or partner papers.
2. You should back up your opinions with supporting evidence. The evidence can come from a variety of sources: personal experience or anecdotal (e.g., What do your friends say? What happened to your roommate?), class material (lecture, textbook), or outside research (but be sure to cite your sources if you decide to use this type of evidence).
3. If you are using friends as sources, you must include the source’s name and e-mail address as part of your reference section at the end of the paper.
- There should be some refinement and maturity in your thought process and writing style.
- This assignment is worth 50 points. Don’t forget the formatting requirements: 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spaced with one-inch margins on all sides, stapled.
- Also, remember that “the media” are PLURAL!!! It’s not: “the (mass) media is…” because “media” is the plural form of the word. If you want to use the singular form, use “medium.” The proper sentence is “the (mass) media are…”
