30 Answers Total Note This Hw Assignment Used To

NOTE: This HW assignment used to be called HW 3A. It has been renamed as HW 4. In the PDF below, and the text-file answer sheet, it may still be called HW 3A.

Follow the instructions in the embedded document below. Type people’s responses into a text file. Then go to page 17.1.2 and upload (or paste) that text into the Text Submission box.

You will probably want to download this answer sheet (Links to an external site.). It’s a very simple text file prototype that will make it easier for you to organize the answers that people give you.

Some students have had trouble seeing the version that’s a Google Doc download, so I have downloaded it myself and re-uploaded it into Canvas. If you can’t see one of the links below, try the other. If it asks for authorization, click Authorize and cross your fingers (grin).

Assignment 3A
Definition of Sexual Orientation
You would think that scientists know what sexual orientation is, right? Being gay, being
straight, being bi? Yes, you would think that, but you would be wrong. In fact, scientists
disagree quite a bit about what sexual orientation is.
And so do nonscientists. The purpose of this exercise is to let you see for yourself what
some of the different definitions are, and to gather a little bit of data about how those
definitions work in the real world. Is there a correlation (a statistical connection)
between someone’s definition and something else that’s important, such as their
attitudes toward gay rights? Or religion? Or someone’s opinion about whether people
can change their orientation?
For this assignment, interview 3 people and to write down their answers to the
questions below. In class, we will put all of your information together and see if we can
find any patterns. If you’re reading this on paper, you can write person #1’s answers
below, and persons #2 and #3 on the back. If you’re reading a PDF online, you can type
people’s answers into a text file. To preserve everyone’s confidentiality, do not write
down any information which might identify your subjects.
