• This week we are going to be taking it up a notch in regard to reading. We started off with some gentle getting to know you reading, and this week we’re going to be reading two challenging essays, the first will be “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum or Work” by Jean Anyon, a dated but still enlightening essay about how children are educated differently according to class. The second essay will be the “Banking Concept of Education” by Paulo Freire, a radical Brazillian educator who critiques everything we know and love about the lecture format. In looking at these essays on my computer, I personally believe it would be impossible for me to process and retain information in any meaningful way, thus I implore you to download both of these essays, and mark them up with notes, insights and questions. The specific assignments will be explained in the content section.

Writing instruction:

• Here are the assignments for week 2
• :1) Download and read Jean Anyon’s Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work. Even though this essay is quite old, and doesn’t take into consideration our most recent technology, and advances, I think it is still relevant simply by the different methods the students are taught. As you read the essay, ask yourself what kind of teaching style most closely resembles the kinds she observes i.e. working class, middle class, executive elite, etc. Then think about how this might relate to our current situation where so much teaching is happening via zoom, and other online platforms where some students don’t even have access to the technology needed.
• 2) Download and read the attachment entited, How to Write a Proper Summary where I show you the template for how I want you to write summaries for this class, and give you a specific example with Anyon.
• 3) Download and read actively the essay “The Banking Concept of Education” by Paulo Friere.
• 4) Write a summary of Freire using the exact template I have provided in the How to Write a Proper Summary download.
