“Leadership Styles and Organizational Design” Please respond to the following:

  • From the e-Activity, argue whether leaders are born or made. Give one (1) example of a great leader whom you admire in the health care field, and elaborate on the primary reasons why you admire the selected leader.
  • Dispute the following hypothesis: Organizational design is irrelevant as long as each department of the hospital runs efficiently (e.g., HR, IT, maintenance, etc.). Justify your response.

  • From the e-Activity, argue whether leaders are born or made. Give one (1) example of a great leader whom you admire in the health care field, and elaborate on the primary reasons why you admire the selected leader.

I believe that leaders are born. Not everyone has the drive to direct people and be “bossy” enough to be a leader. It takes a lot of spunk and being able to stand up to people and get people to see how your way is the best way to go. You can teach someone all of the best management concepts, but if they are not strong enough to enforce them, it just will not work (Nakayama, 2013).

I admire Jonas Salk as a leader in the health care field. He believed in the Polio vaccine that he invented enough to try it out on himself and his own family. That tells me that he had faith in his ideas and would stop at nothing to prove he believed it (Klein, 2014).

  • Dispute the following hypothesis: Organizational design is irrelevant as long as each department of the hospital runs efficiently (e.g., HR, IT, maintenance, etc.). Justify your response.

Having each separate department operate efficiently does not mean that the whole hospital operates and run efficiently. Each department has to work with each other. Scheduling has to work with the providers to find out how they each want their patients scheduled. The financial department has to make sure patients’ insurance is verified. The referral department has to work with individual departments like radiology and the lab. Admitting has to communicate with the floors to make sure rooms are ready. The floor has to communicate with discharge. The whole hospital has to work together to run efficiently and promote patient care (Babiker, El Husseini, Al Nemri, Al Frayh, Al Juryyan, Faki, Al Zamil, 2014).

I believe leaders are born, not made. Nelson Mandela came from royalty. Therefore, it was in his DNA to be a leader. Mandela’s father died when he was 9 years old, and his uncle raised him and groomed him for leadership. He stated that as a child he sat at the feet of the elders and listened to them, knowing a good leader must be good listener. When Mandela was faced with adversity, the leader in him helped him overcome each challenge. Many would have thought he would have died in prison. The strength, and love of his people was the catalyst to help him endure prison. That’s what born leaders do; they turn adversity into success. Mandela’s years in prison prepared him for leadership to eradicate apartheid and become his country’s first black leader.

Ben Carson, the current Secy of Housing & Urban Development, was first a renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon. Other surgeons noted he had gifted ‘hand-eye coordination & 3-dimensional reasoning’ which allowed him to become a great surgeon. He was the first to separate conjoined 7-month old twins at the head. Prior to performing this surgery, Carson and his team used to practiced on dolls using velcro. This shows Carson was a great leader in his field; he listened to his colleagues, ascertained what was important for his surgical success, and continued on meeting his goal of separating the twins and other future twins conjoined at the head. I admire Ben Carson for having the courage to attempt such a feat that hadn’t been done before, and even though one of the twins died years later, it didn’t stop Carson from trying to perform the surgery again successfully.
