Resolving an Ethical Dilemma Presentation (Power Point/Video)

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to develop ethical decision making skills and demonstrate competence in resolving an ethical dilemma. Ethical decision-making is a practice reality. Social work ethics clarify the ethical aspects of professional practice and help practitioners recognize the morally correct way to practice and serve as a guideline for effective decision-making. The student will resolve a dilemma directly experienced in his or her placement site and present in seminar class. This will enable the student to gain experience in resolving an ethical dilemma and develop case presentation skills, as well as, increase classmates’ exposure to the variety of ethical dilemmas experienced by social workers in the field.

Instructions:

Model developed by Congress (1999): E Examine relevant personal, societal, agency, and client professional values. T Think about whether the ethical standards of the NASW Code of Ethics apply to the situation as well as about relevant laws and case decisions. H Hypothesize about possible consequences of different decisions. I Identify who will benefit and who will be harmed in view of social work’s commitment to the most vulnerable. C Consult with supervisor and colleagues about the most ethical choice

Remember, as in all assignments, it is necessary to maintain confidentiality by not presenting any identifying information and disguising the content so as not to inadvertently identify a client or situation.

Note: An ethical dilemma does not have to be major life threatening or legal situation; some of the most challenging ethical dilemmas present themselves in common place everyday situations. Every student experiences ethical dilemmas in field on a regular basis. If a student is struggling with this assignment speak to your Field Faculty Liaison or Field Supervisor. Remember dilemmas can present themselves at any time; thus, the student may complete this assignment at any time during the semester as it will be most valuable at the time the dilemma presents itself.
