Examining Gender Gap in Social Media

As the digital age changes the way of our daily lifestyle, we can observe that gender gaps are also moving to the online media world. At the same time, social media has been given a mission to promote the reduction of gender gaps. In the final paper of this course, I have chosen to further analyze the role and performance of gender gaps in social media and a more explicit understanding of the impact of social media on gender gaps. In addition to the relationship between gender gaps and social media, I will discuss some specific reasons for different performances of gender gaps on social media. It will begin with the explanation the general definition of the gender gap and some of its characteristics. Then, it will next move to consider the ideas and environment of freedom and openness(social media)can be used to dismiss concerns and rationalize the gender gap through the analysis of Reagle (2013) “Free as in sexist?”: Free culture and the gender gap”. After that, I will share the findings of several researches studies. The purpose of these studies is to explore the role and interplay of gender gaps on social media. I will finally argue that even though the inequality phenomenon caused by gender gaps still exists, it is necessary to reduce such gender gaps. To some extent, the existence of social media has potentially beneficial effects and assists to improve the inequality caused by gender gaps.

The first study that I have researched is “What the top engaging stories reveal about the gender gap” which published by Redelmeier (2018). This study used NewsWhip Analytics to investigate the distribution of female journalists on the list of most followed journalists in June to see if there was a gender gap among the most followed writers on social media. The result shows that women writers dominate the participation of lifestyle content, but their participation is still unequal on the breaking news platform. The second study is “Is there a gender gap in social media metrics?” (Sugimoto, et al., 2015) which examined whether there were differences in the visibility of male and female authors’ publications on social networks by comparing the number of events and citations on Twitter, blogs, and news. The result explores that using social media metrics to measure gender equality is higher than using citations to measure scientific impact which means that social media has a higher probability of gender equality. The next study that I will use is “Measuring the Gender Gap on the Internet” concluded from Bimber (2000). It reveals that half of the “digital divide” between men and women on the Internet is fundamentally gender-related by collecting the survey data in 1996, 1998, and 1999 showing trends in Internet use.

In the concluding part of the article,I will return to my argument that social media can promote the reduction of inequality caused by the gender gap and It also highlights the role of the gender gap in social media. But if contemporary social media has mitigated the negative effects of the gender gap, then the other question that prompts deep thinking is how better can social media do for gender gap?

You can do the improvements!!!! to make the paper be more better!!!

But please follow the outline for the general idea and writing order!!!!The central idea cannot be deviated from!!

——————–grade standards——-
